Examining the extraordinary life of a WW2 whistleblower

Learn about the resistance fighter and diplomat who warned world leaders about the Nazi extermination of European Jews when Andrew Krieger presents “The Amazing Life of Jan Karski” on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Village Center.

Karski was a professor in the department of government at Georgetown University for 40 years. In his later years, he was a resident of Friendship Heights. He was also a courageous and much-honored resistance fighter in the Polish underground in occupied Poland during the Second World War.

At the beginning of the war, Karski served as a young officer in the Polish army. After Poland’s defeat, he joined the resistance to Nazi rule. Captured and tortured by the Nazis, Karski managed to escape and served as a courier for the underground, reporting on German activities in Europe and giving among the earliest eyewitness testimonies on the Holocaust to wartime leaders, directly to Roosevelt and the Allies.

Presenter, Dr. Andrew Krieger received his Ph.D. in political science from Georgetown University in 1983. He is a former student of Dr. Jan Karski and has taught at George Washington University, Georgetown University and Montgomery College.
